About TYV
Since its explosive debut under Nygårdsbroen in the fall of 2024, TYV has distinguished itself in the national street art landscape, where the works are a great provocation to some, and a great joy to others. TYV himself is satisfied with both, and believes that the greater the reaction the art arouses, the better!
TYV was not a new artist on the dark, icy night he directed his slanted gaze and razor-sharp satirical comments at the royal family's own Marius Borg Høiby (see separate blog post about the work). So who is TYV, and where did he suddenly come from?
The answer is the explanation of the artist name itself – for TYV was originally known not from the street, but from his works executed on old, national romantic oil paintings. Determined that one person's trash is another person's treasure, TYV transforms the safe, old, and traditional into the challenging, novel, and innovative. Love it or hate it – TYV is adamantly convinced that art should and should arouse strong emotions, engage, create debate, and perhaps even make people angry.
Based in Bergen, but with strong national and international connections from various quarters, TYV acts anonymously as an artist in order to preserve the ability to express himself freely and uninhibitedly. A skeptical but creative soul, someone who has been outside for several winter nights before (and that both with and without a spray can in his fist!) and most of all a critically thinking, questioning, and fearless artist who has a lot on his mind when it comes to society, the world around him, the media, cultural heritage and what art means and what role it should fulfill.
TYV's works, which are available in the form of spray on oil paintings, originals on canvas, art prints, and not least street art in the urban landscape, deal with hypocrisy, politics, youth, beauty, death and much more. In between, mood is glimpsed. In between, sadness and despair. Sometimes pure, raw power. There is a wide range of motifs and styles here, but always thought-provoking, challenging, funny and with more aspects to it the longer you look.
You can decide for yourself how much or little you want to read into each work. Whether you lean more towards the Estonian, or towards biting commentary. Whether you prefer gold frames or rough canvases. Whether you wander the streets and play street art bingo.
One thing is for sure. THIEVES steal your attention.
